NY Beaches Close Because of Sharks

New York officials on Tuesday shut down all beaches in the Rockaways after a pair of sharks were spotted in the area earlier in the day. All seven miles of the beachfront were closed to swimmers as the New York Police Department sent up a helicopter to scan the water for the predators, a spokesman says. The beaches will reopen when the water is "deemed safe," the spokesman says. The sighting occurred one day after New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced plans to order more drone and helicopter monitoring at Long Island State Park following a series of recent shark incidents.
