Man Killed in Attempted Carjacking in Gates

Police say a 71-year-old man was killed in an attempted carjacking Wednesday morning in Gates. Investigators say this was part of a wider series of carjackings across our area. Police were called to Buell Road off Chili Avenue around 10:45 a.m. Wednesday for the report of shots fired. They found a 71-year-old Irondequoit man who had been shot in the upper body. He later died at the hospital. Police agencies around the area are investigating a series of "bait and switch" style car thefts in Greece, Webster, Ogden, Irondequoit and Rochester. Victims of the carjackings have reported their vehicles were rear-ended or blocked in at a traffic light, or they were followed home and approached in their driveway. Police say there have been 14 thefts since late March, all of which are believed to be connected. Police say they are looking for a black passenger car with tinted windows in connection with Wednesday's shooting.A task force has been set up, as has a 24-hour tip line, to help combat the recent crimes. Anyone with information is asked to call either 911 or that tip line at the Gates Police Department, 429-8275. Police encourage citizens to be aware of their surroundings and, if you find yourself in the midst of a carjacking, they say to give up the car for your own safety.
