13 WHAM - An investigation is underway Wednesday after a VFW Post in Fairport was found to be vandalized.
Monroe County Sheriff's deputies said sometime between Sunday, November 5, and Wednesday, November 8, a person or group of people vandalized a bronze memorial sculpture at VFW Post 8495 on Macedon Center Road in Fairport."
"The sculpture depicts empty combat boots with an inverted rifle planted upright between them.
Investigators said the rifle part of the memorial was broken off of the statue and stolen.
Technicians working for the Monroe County Sheriff's Office have looked over the scene and are working to determine who may have been responsible.
"Especially with veterans day coming up, it represents the fallen soldiers who've fought and died for our country," said Eric Warner, commander of VFW Post 8495. "It makes no sense. Why would you do something like this?"
Deputies said they found empty beer cans and a backpack nearby.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 423-9300."
