Internal Investigation Into Inmate Hospital Escape

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says it's stepping up training for deputies and supervisors after the escape of an inmate from Strong Memorial Hospital back in April.

Nineteen-year-old Aliyah Burden of Rochester escaped from the Maternity Ward at Strong on April 30th after slipping out of her restraint while the deputy guarding her was distracted. The pregnant Monroe County jail inmate was loose in the hospital for several hours before being recaptured.

The sheriff's office has completed its internal investigation of that incident, and it's holding every level of the department accountable, up to Sheriff Todd Baxter and the Jail Superintendent. Training on hospital details, inmate restraints and radio procedures will be stepped up, Technology including communications and GPS trackers will be updated. And each inmate who goes to the hospital will be given a risk assessment to determine the level of security they should be assigned.
