According to a report in the New York Times, President Donald Trump's longtime personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, secretly recorded a phone conversation he had with Trump regarding a payment to a former Playboy model who claimed she had an affair with him. The recording was made two months before the 2016 presidential election and was seized by the FBI when they raided Cohen's office, home, and hotel room. The two were reportedly discussing paying Karen McDougal to keep quiet about an alleged affair she had with Trump for ten months in 2006.
CNN reported that President Trump's legal team has reviewed a transcript of the recording and does not believe it puts Trump in any legal danger.
Rudy Giuliani, who is working on Trump’s legal team, confirmed the authenticity of the tape and admitted that Trump and Cohen discussed paying the former Playboy model. He explained that in the end, no payments were made and the recording was less than two minutes long and proved that the president did nothing wrong.
