Officials in Missouri have confirmed that at least eight people have died after a duck boat sank on the Table Rock River. 31 people, including children, were onboard the "Ride the Ducks" boat when it capsized early Thursday (July 19) evening. Seven people were taken to the hospital and divers are continuing to search the lake for survivors.
The boat capsized and sank to the bottom of the lake as a line of severe thunderstorms rolled through the area with recorded wind gusts of over 60 miles per hour on land, according to Fox 4. There were three-foot waves on the lake due to the fast-moving storms, and the wind was likely even stronger on the open water.
Eric Nielsen, a spokesman with the Southern Stone County Fire Protection District told WGN9 that officials are "not sure if that is the contributing factor" adding that "there is a lot of storm debris."
Stone County Sheriff Doug Radar told the press that rescue workers will continue to search the lake throughout the night and warned that it is "going to be a challenging night and tomorrow."
