President Donald Trump issued a all-caps challenge to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani Sunday night, warning that any aggressive action taken against the U.S. would be met with severe "...CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED."
The tweet came just hours after Iran's President Hassan Rouhani gave a speech warning the United States that they could not prevent his country from exporting oil and that "peace with Iran would be the mother of all peace and war with Iran would be the mother of all wars."
Trump sent his all-caps missive late Sunday night:
To Iranian President Rouhani: NEVER, EVER THREATEN THE UNITED STATES AGAIN OR YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE. WE ARE NO LONGER A COUNTRY THAT WILL STAND FOR YOUR DEMENTED WORDS OF VIOLENCE & DEATH. BE CAUTIOUS!
Within hours of Trump's tweet, Iran's state-owned news agency IRNA dismissed U.S. president's rhetoric calling it a "passive reaction" to Rouhani's remarks.
The back and forth between the two presidents is the latest in escalation of rhetoric after Trump withdrew the U.S. from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. The other countries who were a part of the deal have vowed to stand by it.
