Bath Man Charged With Trying to Meet 9-Year-Old For Sex

A Bath man is accused of trying to meet a 9-year-old child for sex and having child pornography. William Read, 33, is accused of using an social media app to try to meet the child. According to federal investigators Read sent messages over the app to an undercover officer who pretended to be a 35-year-old man with a 9-year-old niece. Read sent several messages to the officer, expressing interest in raping the child. Federal attorneys said Read was traveling to meet the child for sex on Monday. Investigators said Read had condoms and candy when he was arrested. Investigators seized Read's phone and allegedly found child pornography photos. Read was charged with online enticement of a minor, and distribution and possession of child pornography. He had previously been arrested in 2004 for sexual misconduct and pleaded guilty to endangering the welfare of a child. If convicted, Read faces a minimum of 10 years in federal prison, with the potential of a life sentence. He also could be fined up to $250,000. Read is in federal custody without bail.
