A recent study found that children under the age of twelve should not over-the-counter cough and cold medications because they can elevate a child's heart rate and put them at risk for heart-related problems. Decongestants can also cause irritability. Doctors says running a cool mist vaporizer in a child's room at night can help loosen up congestion, as can the use of saline nasal drops. Experts say parents can use a bulb syringe or suction device to remove nasal mucous on very small children who cannot blow their nose on their own.
