Shelley Duvall, an iconic actress perhaps best known for her role in Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, has died. She was 75.
Duvall's longtime partner Dan Gilroy, whom she has been with since 1989, confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that she passed away in her sleep on Thursday (July 11) as a result of complications from diabetes at her home in Blanco, Texas, telling the outlet, "My dear sweet, wonderful life partner and friend left us. Too much suffering lately, now she's free. Fly away, beautiful Shelley."
According to NBC News, Duvall had been in hospice care and bedridden for a few months from diabetic complications, with Gilroy telling the outlet that she is "gone after much suffering" and that he "can't tell you how much I miss her."
Duvall has dozens of acting credits to her name ranging from film roles to appearances in TV movies and shows, with roles in films like Popeye, Annie Hall, Nashville and 3 Women, the latter of which earned her the Cannes Film Festival Award for best actress in 1977. She is perhaps best known, however, for her role as Wendy Torrence in Kubrick's 1980 horror classic The Shining, starring opposite Jack Nicholson. Duvall's last acting credit, according to IMDb, is as Mama in the 2023 horror drama The Forest Hills, her first role in over 20 years.
