A South Carolina man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after setting fire to a Walmart -- so he could steal some beer.
Greenwood resident Russell William Geddings, 34, received the maximum penalty for a third-degree arson charge in connection with the incident, which happened in December. Security cameras caught Geddings setting fire to a men's clothing rack in a local Walmart, which he later admitted was to create a distraction so he could run out of the store with a case of beer. Store officials say the blaze caused $1.2 million in damage.
After handing down the sentence, Circuit Judge Donald Hocker said, "It is shocking to me that this man would put innocent lives at risk and destroy property just so he could steal a few beers. I am satisfied knowing that he will not be able to victimize the people of this community in such a manner for many years to come."
