The New York State Sheriffs’ Association wants the state to fund at least one armed school resource officer at every school in the state. The association says the number of school resource officers has dropped in recent years due to the lack of funding. There are about 4,750 public schools and nearly 2,000 private schools in the state. The Sheriffs’ Association estimates that the cost would be equivalent to that of adding one teacher to each school. The state legislature would have to approve the funding.
