The American Lung Association, Heart Association and Cancer Society jointly called today for New York State to raise its legal smoking age to 21. Last week’s Lung Association report on the “State of Tobacco Control” said New York is no longer a leader and has fallen behind in the effort to get people to quit. At an Albany news conference, the groups called on lawmakers to pass “Tobacco 21,” the bill raising the purchase age for cigarettes and all tobacco products to 21.They say more than 28 percent of New York high school students use at least one tobacco product.
