Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation Tuesday which raises the age of consent to marry to 18. The law raises the age of marriage consent from 14 years old, and parental and judicial consent will be required for individuals between the ages of 17 and 18 who are looking to get married. The previous law dated back to 1929, and the governor’s office said it did not give judges guidance on how to determine whether consent could be granted.
