The FBI has now entered the case of the credit card skimmers recovered yesterday from a gas station in Livingston County.
Sheriff Tom Dougherty says federal agents are hoping they can trace the components built into the skimming devices back to their source for clues to the people who planted them.
Sheriff Dougherty says the scammers are typically part of an organized gang. They use a universal gas pump key to open the pump and install the skimmer device into the pump's electronics. It collects your personal information when you swipe your credit card...and the scammers can download it via Bluetooth without having to get out of their car. Then they put your account information on a cloned credit card and use it to buy gift cards at a big box store like a Walmart, laundering the stolen money.
