Monroe County Sheriff's Office says a deputy was assaulted in a violent attack at the Monroe County Jail. Officers say a female MCSO deputy was serving dinner to inmates on Sunday. The deputy opened a cell door to give an inmate her dinner when she was attacked by Dawntaya Harris. The deputy was punched multiple times, knocked to the ground and then placed in a rear chokehold to the point of nearly losing consciousness. The deputy was able to briefly hit the transmit button on her radio for help. The 23-year-old was charged with second degree assault and second degree strangulation. Deputies say Harris was being held without bail in the jail on first and second degree attempted robbery and second degree assault for an incident that happened back on Nov. 8. Harris was arraigned Tuesday on the new charges.
